How Many Songs in a Song Demo?
By: Jerry A. Greene
Question: I am just completeing my song demo and getting it ready for mastering. I was wondering how many songs I should put on a CD if I am going to be sending it out to publishers and producers as a demo of what I can do?
Answer: It depends on what you are trying to accomplish with your song demo CD. Are you trying to get a recording contract? Is it going to and A&R departement, or a record producer? Are you trying to get your songs published? Are you trying to secure a staff writer position with a music publisher? These are all questions that you need to consider when trying to figure out how to best put a demo CD together.
For most instances, having 3 songs is sufficient on a demo CD. Your strongest song should be the first. Don't put more than 5 songs on a demo CD unless you are specifically asked to do so. Most music industry professionals simply don't have the time to listen to a whole CD.
Unfortunately, most CD's end up in the garbage, or in a big pile that never get listened to, so make sure that you have permission to send the demo song CD in the first place!
